  Launch of the Kraken ROV
Launch of the Kraken from the R/V Connecticut before receiving it's new colors
The Kraken, named after the mythical sea monster, is a MaxROV MK-I light-work class ROV, from Deep Sea Systems International. The vehicle was custom built to our specifications with an open frame design to support all existing sampling systems and allow us to expand the sampling capabilities even further. For example, we now have the capability to collect multiple suction samples, three 4"x4" box cores, simultaneous video signals from multiple cameras (3 CCD, telephoto, wide angle, low light, digital still), and operate a sector scanning sonar. The large payload capacity of this vehicle permits multiple types of sampling on a single dive. The depth limit for the vehicle is currently restricted, due to tether length, to 1000 m. This vehicle can maneuver in currents up to 100 cm s-1. The Kraken was converted to a fiber optic system in 2002 to increase data bandwidth and allow further sampling systems operation.
