The Hela is the largest inspection class ROV operated by the Center. The vehicle is very adaptable for a wide variety of research tasks due to its open frame design and high output thrusters. The system can be operated to a depth of 450 m and can maneuver in currents up to 100 cm/s. The vehicle is equipped with a 3CCD digital video camera (and can support up to 3 additional video channels), 200 watt HMI lights, sector scanning sonar, and 35 mm camera and electronic flash. Suction sampling and various payloads can be accommodated. Data and telemetry are carried via RS-232/485 interface over a fiber optic tether.
