Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What hardware/software do I need to view the live video stream?

A1: A modern Windows or Apple computer with at least 300 Kbps Internet connectivity. Your computer must have Windows Media Player installed to ensure that you have the correct VC1 plug-in.

Q2: How do I access the video stream?

A2: There are two methods to access the video stream from the internet. First, you can open your Windows Media Player, select File from the menu, open URL in new player, and paste the following link (mms://powerhost.live.powerstream.net/00300099_live1). The advantage of this method is that the video is scalable to your own preference in Windows Media Player.

Second, you can participate in the online video and PowerPoint slide presentation by opening the designated URL in your web browser at the designated time (EDT).

AM Webcast (10:30-11:30): http://www.nurc.uconn.edu/lislivedive/Invaders1

PM Webcast (13:45-14:30): http://www.nurc.uconn.edu/lislivedive/Invaders3

Here, you will also be able to view an informative slideshow and post questions to the scientists onboard the R/V Connecticut.

Q3: What video quality should I expect?

A3: The LiveDive webcast will accomodate a wide range of educational, government, and public users groups by providing an online multimedia presentation that is hosted by PowerStream. The streaming video available through this website will be 320x240 pixels in size, 15 frames per second, and approximately 300 Kbps in throughput.

The wireless network that NURC has established from the R/V Connecticut to UConn - Avery Point will provide approximately 25 Mbps of bandwidth over more than 8 miles distance. During the broadcast, we will also provide a high quality MPEG-2 (DVD quality) video transmission to particants in the auditorium of the Marine Science Building at Avery Point. This high quality transmission will also be multicast to other institutions on the Internet2, over the Connecticut Education Network (Title: 2006 LIS Didemnum Live Dive Broadcast). To view the MPEG-2 broadcast, you can download the free VBrick StreamPlayer program at http://www.vbrick.com/StreamPlayerPlusAuto/StreamPlayerPlusform.htm.
